MGM Resorts Hack of 2023

MGM Resorts International revealed yesterday that it's grappling with a cybersecurity issue affecting several systems, including its primary website, online reservations, and in-casino services like ATMs, slot machines, and credit card machines.

The company announced the situation on its X (formerly known as Twitter) profile, stating that they swiftly initiated an investigation upon discovering the issue and promptly took measures to safeguard their systems and data, which included shutting down certain systems. Sounds like game over for MGM.

The outage seemingly commenced on Sunday night, causing disruptions in the resorts’ computer systems. As a result, the company has transitioned to manual operations, with ATMs and credit card machines at their properties being impacted. Some guests have reported that their room keys were not working, adding to the operational challenges faced by the resort.

The MGM Resorts main website is also offline, redirecting customers to make hotel reservations via phone. MGM Rewards customers have been instructed to call a Member Services number for assistance. Yikes…

All MGM websites sharing the main domain name, mgmresorts.com, have been offline for an extended period. While the nature and purpose of the cyberattack remain undisclosed, this incident marks the second cybersecurity event for MGM Resorts since 2019 when a breach compromised over 10 million customer records.

The situation is evolving, leaving us with questions about the company’s future and how these cyberattacks can severely dent their revenue. Would you still consider doing business at MGM after such a massive data breach? How do these attacks pose risks to the company’s financial stability?
